Concepts of Accessible Information Technology and Section 508
In this class, we will:
- Introduce Section 508
- Discuss the need for accessible IT design
- Explore barriers facing people with disabilities
- Introduce and demonstrate assistive technology used to help remove barriers
- Provide brief overview and discuss technical standards for Section 508
Accessible Web Design
In this class, we will:
- Explore each technical standard of Section 508 (Section 1194.22) with examples and proper development techniques
- Provide hands-on experience navigating both accessible and non-accessible web pages
Accessible Client Software
In this class, we will:
- Explore each technical standard of Section 508 (Section 1194.21) with examples and accessible development techniques
- Provide hand-on exercises using assistive technology (JAWS, ZoomText and OS accessibility features)
- Present a "case study" using accessible vs. non-accessible software
- Discuss a simulated accessibility review for the application
- Present testing techniques using checklists provided to evaluate a case study model
Disability Awareness Training
In this class, we will:
- Discuss how perceptions of people with disabilities can lead to complaints and present new information to change attitudes of people who are unfamiliar with disabilities
- Introduce the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Provide general information on disabilities and abilities
- Focus on hearing, visual, mental, and mobility disabilities
- Discuss areas unique to your business or service
- Offer tips on interacting with people with disabilities
- Dispel common myths and clarify appropriate language/cultural etiquette through helpful exercises
Developing and Delivering Accessible Documentation
In this class, we will:
- Provide an overview of the Section 508 documentation and support requirement
- Discuss the need for accessible documentation
- Offer tips on accessible formats
- Address the accessibility challenges and solutions for PDF files formats
- Instruct on textual descriptions of graphics
- Give examples and instruction for producing Braille, large print, audio cassette, etc.
Making Your Support Services Accessible
In this class, we will:
- Discuss topics including:
- Describing and distinguishing between various types of disabilities
- Types of hardware and software used to accommodate these disabilities
- System requirements
- General usage of assistive technology equipment
- Provide troubleshooting tips
- Explain when and where to call for outside help
- Offer tips on interacting with people with disabilities, including telecommunications equipment
- Discuss new and future technology
Understanding Telecommunications Accessibility
In this class, we will:
- Provide a comprehensive overview each of the technical standards of Section 1194.23 as it relates to telecommunications equipment
- Address barriers facing individuals with disabilities when accessing telecommunications equipment
- Discuss TTY and its basic use, voice mail accessibility, caller ID functions, etc.
- Cover consideration planning and demonstrate practical applications of accessible telecommunications equipment
